Travel Tips From a Flight Attendant

Travel can be a stressful experience, especially when you encounter last-minute challenges. As a flight attendant living in Denver and based in Las Vegas, I’ve experienced the stress of flying and unexpected challenges at many airports. Here are my top tips to help you better prepare for your flight.

Here are my top tips.

Travel Tip: Browse Airport Website

Did you know that every airport has its own website? It may seem like a small detail, but browsing an airport’s website can provide you with important information as a traveler. You can stay updated on the latest airport news and updates, such as wait times at security points and their operating hours. Most websites also provide approximate security line lengths, helping you choose the most efficient one. If you’re traveling early or taking a red-eye flight, check the restaurant options and their operating hours. This will help you decide whether to purchase food at the airport or bring your own.

Travel Tip: Getting Through TSA

Every airport is different and so are the TSA agents. Although the rules are the same across every airport, you might come across TSA agents that handle situations differently. Make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to get through TSA in case this does happen.

Here are some basic travel tips to help you:

  • No liquids that are more than 3.4 ounces.
  • Take your laptop out of the bag.
  • Shoes, jackets, and any metals come off.
  • If you are traveling with kids, take all liquids, food, formula, and water in one bag to make it easier when TSA is searching your bag.

Travel Tip: Flights are Full

With flights being at total capacity, my travel tip is to be prepared. If you have a carry-on, make sure that you board early enough to get the overhead bin close to your seat. Additionally, I highly recommend purchasing a preferred seat, whether it’s a window or aisle seat, to avoid the discomfort of being stuck in the middle seat during a long flight. This tip is especially important for families traveling together. Investing in pre-booked seats ensures that you’ll be seated together and enjoy a more pleasant journey.

Travel Tip: Take Snacks and Drink

Here’s a money-saving travel tip for you: pack some snacks and an empty water bottle. Once you pass through security, you can fill your bottle at a water fountain station, saving you money on expensive airport bottled water. This tip is very helpful when traveling with a family, save money wherever you can. While liquids are not allowed through TSA, you can bring food, if you are traveling with a family, this is a big money saver.

Travel Tip: Take Sanitizer and Wet Wipes

Most people already carry sanitizer and wet wipes, but in case you don’t make sure you have them for your flight. Remember there are many people flying on a plane and touching everything you are touching. If you are going to eat, drink or touch your face…sanitize first.

Travel Tip: Take All Medication On Board

This is a major tip! It is my most important travel tip if you carry medication. Carry any medication you have in your carry-on. I cannot tell you from experience as a flight attendant how many times passengers have gotten sick mid-flight and they tell us their medication is in their checked luggage. So. Many. Times. Do yourself a favor, carry your medicine.

Another travel tip: Even if you are not on medication, take ibuprofen, antacid, decongestion medicine, allergy medicine, and some gum/candy. Why? First of all, there is a very limited amount of medicine on a plane, so take your own just in case. Second, you don’t know how your body will react on a plane. Sometimes altitude, lack of water, lack of food or the stress of travel gives you a headache or stomach ache. Have medicine just in case. Also, take candy because there are many times when you don’t feel well and you don’t know why. If you have a little candy, the sugar will help you feel better. Trust me.

As a flight attendant, I am constantly seeing all the challenges passengers have. I’ve shared some easy travel tips you can follow to make your travel easier.
